TradeGear stocks three masking film formats, and the difference isn’t just tape-or-no-tape — it’s whether the film can run through a mechanical dispenser. Standard Pre-Taped film has tape pre-applied but a standard core, hand-apply only. Big Core Pre-Taped has the same pre-applied tape, but a large core built to fit a 3M-style hand-masker dispenser. Pre-Folded film has no tape at all and needs it applied separately, generally through the same dispenser.

Why core size actually matters
A hand-masker dispenser — the wheeled tool a painter pushes along a wall or floor edge to lay down tape and film in one continuous pass — needs a specific core diameter to load and feed smoothly. Standard pre-taped film uses a narrower core sized for hand use only; it physically won’t seat correctly in a 3M-style dispenser. Big Core film is built with a wider core specifically so it does. That’s the entire difference between the two pre-taped options — same 30-day Pro Contractor tape, same film, same adhesion — one is built to be fed through a machine, one isn’t.
| Pre-Folded | Standard Pre-Taped | Big Core Pre-Taped | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tape included | No | Yes (30-day Pro Contractor) | Yes (30-day Pro Contractor) |
| Works with hand-masker dispenser | Yes (adds tape as it feeds) | No — core too narrow | Yes |
| Application | Tape applied separately, by hand or via dispenser | By hand | By hand, or via dispenser for continuous fast application |
| Cost/metre (material only) | $0.61 | $0.64 | $0.71 |
| Best for | Crews already running a dispenser, buying tape and film separately | Occasional jobs, no equipment needed | Volume jobs where dispenser speed matters and pre-applied tape saves a step |
On material cost alone, Pre-Folded is cheapest per metre once you factor in your own tape, and Big Core costs about 7 cents more per metre than Standard — a small premium for skipping the hand-taping step entirely on every roll. The real economics aren’t in the film price though, they’re in labour: a dispenser lays tape and film in one continuous push, versus unrolling and pressing film by hand a metre at a time. On a job with any real length of masking — skirtings through a whole house, a full roomful of windows — that time difference adds up faster than the few cents per metre does.
The equipment

- TradeGear Masking Film Dispenser ($7.15–$9.90) — a basic tear-away holder for any of the three films or paper. No moving parts, just a clean tear. Works with all three film types, but doesn’t apply tape.
- TradeGear Masking Film and Paper Dispenser ($88.00) — the actual hand-masker, feeding tape and film together in one continuous pass. This is the tool a Big Core roll is built to run through, and what turns Pre-Folded film into a one-pass system by adding tape as it feeds.
Quick pick
- One-off job, no equipment on hand → Standard Pre-Taped
- Running a dispenser and buying tape separately anyway → Pre-Folded
- Production masking, want dispenser speed without a separate taping step → Big Core Pre-Taped
