It compresses into the profile instead of bridging over it, so you sand the shape on the machine instead of folding paper round it by hand.

A flat sander only ever touches the high points

That's why profiles get done by hand — and why they take so long. A thin interface pad doesn't fix it either: it runs out of give before it reaches the bottom of the moulding, so you flatten the detail you're being paid to keep.

XPT pads are deep enough to deform properly. The 18mm is the deepest ready-to-sand pad in the category — most stop around 13mm — and the abrasive is already bonded to the foam, so there's no separate sheet to buy, cut and stick on.

12mm or 18mm?

Same colour system, same fit. The difference is how deep the profile is.

One colour system, no guesswork

Green is Coarse. Yellow is Medium. Orange is Fine. Blue is Very Fine. That holds across the whole XPT range — the same colour means the same grit whether you've got the 12mm, the 18mm or the Delta in your hand. Grab the right one off the van without reading the box.

Very Fine is available in the 12mm and the Delta. The 18mm runs Coarse, Medium and Fine — the grits deep profile work actually calls for.

The 12mm standard pad is a 15 pack for $44. Comparable foam-backed profile abrasives are sold in 10 packs at the same price — and those ranges stop at three grits with no Coarse at all, so stripping heavier buildup sends you looking for a different product.
